Moto Cross-Examine: Colt Nichols

Photos by: Alec Gaut (Gaut This Media)

Another rider emerges from the Sooner State. While most people don’t know what a Sooner is, Oklahoma native Colt Nichols wants Monster Energy AMA Supercross fans to know who he is. Last Saturday Nichols made his debut with many others at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas for the 250SX East Region opener. Nichols qualified fifteenth, finished sixth in his heat, and ended the night in eleventh. With mixed feelings and the first race jitters out of the way, the rookie heads to Atlanta this weekend feeling optimistic. We caught up with number 986 this week to get his thoughts and feelings going into Atlanta.

Jessica: What does it feel like to have come such a long ways to racing your first Supercross?

Colt: It was a surreal feeling getting to race at that level. Something every racer as a little guy wants to do is to race Supercross. I was very happy but bummed with my result.

I see you had some pretty rad gear for Supercross?

Yea its Ride 365 gear that’s part of Brett Cue and Dayton Daft with Motosport. The gear itself is mainly proto type at this time. After I wear it for a while, representing it while I’m racing Supercross, we will launch it to the public. Pretty excited and looks awesome!

At the starting gate in the Supercross environment, did you have any nerves going on? Were they like the butterflies you would get at any other race?

I would say the nervousness is more before the gate drop. You look up into the stands and see 50 thousand spectators. But once the helmet goes on it’s just like any other normal race.

Finishing eleventh is right there almost with the top ten. Are you pleased with your performance in Dallas?

Yes and no. I’m happy with the circumstances. I was rushed with only 2 weeks on the bike before this weekend because of a previous injury. There’s a lot there for me and I know there’s a lot more to achieve.

You learn anything going into Atlanta?

It was good experience for me and now heading into Atlanta I know what to expect. The day of the race there is a really crazy schedule and format. It was good to see where I fit in. Atlanta will be a lot better and were looking forward to this weekend.

Do you think Arenacross “The road to Supercross” helped you prepare in any way for the real deal?

Yes for sure, many things with Arenacross and Supercross are similar. It’s almost the exact down scale of a Supercross track. Arenacross had a lot of good guys competing which made it beneficial. It definitely made me a better racer. I’m excited to take what I’ve learned into Supercross.

Tell me about your team. Who is helping you out?

Riding Motosport.com GPI/ Honda Racing. They have been absolutely awesome to me. Guy Cooper is helping me out and I’ve always looked up to him. Marshall Plum, Dunlop, Ride 365, Bell, Elks Brand, Motostuff, Novik, Kicker, ODI, PBRMX, FMF, Works Connection and Reynard Training Complex.
